State Technical College West Texas began offering a two year Associates
degree in Wind Energy at the Sweetwater campus in 2007. This degree
is a full track program that introduces the student to Wind Energy and
electro-mechanical concepts. It is designed to prepare the student to
work in industry at both the technical and administrative levels. In
the creation of this program, TSTC partnered with industry leaders such
as Florida Power and Light (FPL) to identify critical needs for new
hires and to tailor instruction to meet and exceed those needs. |
With
a full program established, TSTC is now prepared to offer Level 1 Certifications
in this program area. In addition, the courses are now prepared to be
offered online in either a 100% online format or in a hybrid format
that exposes the student to both online and lab instruction. The certificate
program is designed to be shorter to allow the student to move more
quickly into the workplace and is focused solely on skills for an entry
level technician. All courses are transferable to a degree should the
student desire to return to TSTC for a degree at a later date. |

TSTC West Texas in partnership with Texas Workforce Commission received a $523,430.00 DOL grant to develop a Wind Energy Certificate with On-line delivery. A portion of the grant dollars will scholarship 15 students in a Cohort group to complete the Certificate. This scholarship will pay for all tuition and fees. The courses will be taught across seven five week blocks in sequence some of which will be 100% on-line, while others will be hybrid, composed on on-line material and 2 weekends during the five weeks of instruction for lab project experiential learning at the Sweetwater campus. The courses of study will culminate in a practicum experience at the end wherein students will receive on-the job learning and work in the field. The first course will begin March 3rd. TSTC West Texas is accepting applications for 7 remaining scholarships to be awarded to top candidates based on assessment scores in math, reading, and writing. TSTC West Texas is the first College in Texas to have a Wind Energy and Turbine Technology program approved by The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board.
